  • About Destination Imagination

To be the global leader in teaching the creative process from imagination to innovation.

To develop opportunities that inspire the global community of learners to utilize diverse approaches in applying 21st century skills and creativity.

The Destination Imagination program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams showcase their solutions at tournaments.

Destination Imagination is open to all kindergarten through university level students worldwide. Students form teams of up to 7 members, select their preferred Challenge and work together to develop a solution to the Challenge. Each team has at least one team manager (often a parent or teacher) who helps keep the team on track, but does not assist or interfere with the team’s project.

Our 21st century learning programming is cross-curricular and complements K-12 education by fostering curiosity, courage and creativity. All of our academic Challenges are designed to teach students the creative process—a system of learning that is at the root of all innovation and a child’s ability to bring an idea to life. We offer seven engaging Challenges in STEAM education: Technical, Scientific, Fine Arts, Improvisational, Engineering, Service Learning and Early Learning.

Click the following link to preview the 2018-2019 Challenges:

Each season takes place from September through May. Depending on the Challenge, teams typically spend 2 to 4 months developing and practicing their Challenge solutions. Teams have the opportunity to showcase their solutions at local tournaments, many of which take place between February and April. When a team qualifies at the state level, they are invited to compete at Global Finals—the world’s largest celebration of student creativity.

Destination Imagination participants experience these components of the creative process while solving our challenges:

    – Becoming aware of the challenge
    – Gaining an in-depth understanding of the challenge

    – Generating ideas with team members
    – Focusing on promising ideas
    – Creating a project timeline

    – Researching, exploring and experimenting
    – Committing to options; building and completing all requirements

    – Assessing progress; reworking or reimagining ideas
    – Practicing presenting the solution

    – Presenting at a tournament
    – Reflecting on and celebrating the experience

    Bridging the Gap

We offer high-quality, STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) Challenges that help bridge the gap between what students learn in school and the skills they will need to thrive in an ever-changing economy.

    Imagine the Possibilities

The Destination Imagination Challenge Program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, curiosity and courage through academic Challenges. Our Challenges blend STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education with the arts and social entrepreneurship. Students who participate learn invaluable 21st century skills as well as patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process.

The Two Components of the DI Program

How will Teams be Assessed at the

At the tournament, Destination Imagination teams will solve

two types of Challenges: Team Challenges and Instant

Challenges. Teams will perform their Challenge solutions

to a group of Appraisers. Destination Imagination Appraisers

are local volunteers who have been trained to assess the

    What is a Team Challenge?

There are six new competitive Team Challenges to choose from each

year. The areas of focus include: Technical, Scientific, Fine

Arts, Improvisational, Structural and Service Learning. There

is also a non-competitive Early Learning Challenge. View our

current season’s Challenge previews at Destinationimagination.

The Team Challenge is the combination of the Central

Challenge and Team Choice Elements. After developing

solutions to Team Challenges, teams can attend tournaments

to showcase their solutions in front of Appraisers and live

The Central Challenge encourages development of critical

thinking, problem solving techniques, teamwork and the

creative process over a sustained period of time (usually 2

    to 4 months).

Team Choice Elements are team-selected elements that are

incorporated with the Central Challenge to allow creative

    freedom in showcasing additional strengths.

    What is an Instant Challenge?

Instant Challenges require teams to engage in quick, creative

    and critical thinking.

At a tournament, a team will receive an Instant Challenge and

the materials with which to solve it. The team members must

think on their feet by applying appropriate skills to produce

a solution in a period of just 5 to 8 minutes.

In a world with growing cultural connections, increased levels

and types of communication, and a new need for real-time

teamwork and problem solving, the ability to solve problems

    quickly is becoming increasingly critical.

    Instant Challenges are performance-based, task-based, or a

combination of the two. Although each Instant Challenge has

different requirements, all Instant Challenges reward teams

for their teamwork. Instant Challenges are kept confidential

until the day of the tournament.

  • Community Service

Bayside DI Community Service Day at ACLT Double Oak Farm

Bayside Destination Imagination has partnered with the American Chestnut Land Trust's Double Oak Farm in Prince Frederick. The Double Oak Farm uses environmentally friendly and sustainable farming methods and donates over 75% of it's harvest to the St. John Vianney Interfaith Food Pantry.

The Bayside Destination Imagination crew enjoyed a beautiful November morning at the Double Oak Farm. The kids learned a great deal from garden manager and Master Gardner R. T. West.

The kids established two Hugelkultur raised beds and also started their ongoing project - a pizza garden! We planted garlic and will return in the spring to plant onions, tomatoes, peppers, and herbs. The Farm is also planting wheat and will build a clay oven on site next to our pizza garden. Early next fall the Bayside DI teams will have a very special pizza party to reap the benefits of their labor! 🍕🍕🍕

We thoroughly enjoyed our morning at the Farm! We learned a great deal and loved the opportunity to give back to the community we call home.

    Plogging Calvert with Bayside DI

Bayside DI flexed their creativity as they celebrated Earth Day 2019. They enjoyed a beautiful April afternoon to go plogging!

What is plogging? Plogging - a play on the Swedish words 'plocka upp' (meaning 'pick up') - turns an ordinary workout into an opportunity to help our planet. It combines jogging with picking up litter.

Thank you to our amazing crew of kiddos who gave up their last afternoon of spring break to help to clean up their community!

Accident Prone team places 3rd in the world at Global Finals 2018!

    On top of the world!

The Accident Prone team placed first in the South Central Regional Tournament, 2nd in the Maryland State Tournament and 3rd in the world in the "Treasure" improv challenge. This was out of 82 teams from around the world who participated at the Destination Imagination Global Finals Tournament in Knoxville, TN!

Dedication and team work pays off

The Accident Prone team researched and studied for months to prepare for competition in the Improv "Treasure" Challenge.

To solve the "Treasure" improv challenge the team had to do the following:

    • Select and research 8 explorers from a provided list of various explorers in 6 exploration categories.
    • They also had to come up with 8 cultures that currently exist or previously existed on Earth, research them and come up with a "cultural treasure" that each of the cultures value.
    • At tournament the team selected at random (out of a bucket) 2 of their explorers and 1 of their cultures that they had researched.  The team had 2 minutes to quickly plan a 5-minute skit where they had to have the two explorers work together to return the lost cultural treasure to the people of that culture.  The team also had to incorporate a prop-in-motion (a plain white bedsheet), a tournament-provided unusual place, and a tournament-provided setback into their story.
    • The team was judged on their ability to creatively incorporate all of the above elements into a cohesive and entertaining story as well as display effective teamwork during their planning and presentation.
    • You can view the team's improv performance from the Globals Tournament below in the photos & videos section.

Managing a Destination Imagination team is a unique and rewarding experience. Team managers provide support in helping team members understand the process of deciphering and solving the Challenge the team selects. A unique component of DI is that it is 100% student- driven meaning that team members make all decisions and perform 100% of the work that goes into solving Challenges. In that way the team has complete ownership in their success in their Challenge solution.

Maryland Destination Imagination provides training for adults interested in managing a team. Bayside Destination Imagination will coordinate all training, background checks, team formation, and tournament registration.
